Pack an order

Every step of the pack, from scanning the tote to buying the label and closing the pack.

Packing is the second hands-on stage of outbound. You take a picked tote, verify every item in it, choose a box, buy a shipping label, and close the pack. This guide follows the whole job scan by scan.

Everything here lives under the Packing section of the sidebar, on the Pack Order tab. It is operator-only. A brand on a client account only ever sees the read-only History tab. For the screen-by-screen reference, see the Packing manual.

Before you start

A pack session only starts from a picked tote. That means a tote in the In Use state, assigned to an order whose lines have been picked. In practice this is the tote that came off a finished pick. Have it in hand before you scan.

The pack session

Open Packing → Pack Order. The session moves through four phases, shown in the stepper: Scan Tote → Verify Items → Select Box → Label.

Scan Tote

The screen waits on "Scan tote to start packing". Scan the tote's barcode. If a barcode will not scan, use Type manually.

Scanning pulls up the order behind that tote and moves you to Verify Items.

Pack flow — Scan Tote phase

Verify Items

Now you prove every picked unit is really in the tote. Scan each item. The screen shows a progress counter (verified / total), a live weight readout, and a card per SKU with the remaining quantity.

Pack flow — Verify Items at the start, 0 of 3 scanned, one card per SKU with its remaining quantity

As you scan, each card turns green with a check, the counter climbs, and the running weight updates. Any SKU still waiting keeps its orange remaining-quantity badge.

Pack flow — Verify Items in progress, two SKUs checked off green and one still remaining

A few things to know here:

  • Scanning a SKU that is already fully verified errors. Once a SKU is complete it is no longer pending, so a re-scan reports "No pending item matches barcode". That is the guard against overscanning.
  • Kit items are grouped under a dashed header with their components listed.
  • If the order was changed in the sales channel after picking, a warning lists what changed. Check it before you ship.

When every item is verified, press Continue to Box Selection. The button only appears once nothing is left pending.

Select Box

Pick a box. The screen shows a grid of the client's active boxes, each with its dimensions (L × W × H in) and max weight in oz. If an automation rule matched, the suggested box carries a Recommended badge.

Need a size that is not listed? Use the dashed New Size tile to add one inline (name, length, width, height, and an optional max weight in oz). If the client has no boxes configured yet, the screen prompts you to create the first one.

Label

The last phase buys the postage. The screen shows the resolved postage type (for example "Shipping method: Express → Postage type: Cheapest Tracked"), the chosen box, and the shipping address.

Pack flow — the Shipping Label screen in its ready state, before Generate Label

  1. Check the address. Press Edit Address to fix any field (name, lines, city, state, ZIP, country, phone) and Save.
  2. Generate the label. Press Generate Label. The app fetches live carrier rates and, for a normal cost, buys the label straight away.
  3. Approve a high rate if prompted. If the rate comes back over the $100 auto-approval threshold, the app pauses and asks you to confirm the estimated cost before it buys. This is the guard against an accidental expensive label.
  4. Print. Once the label is generated you see the tracking number, carrier, and total, and the label is ready to Print or Download.

Finally, press Complete Packing. This closes the pack: the order becomes Fulfilled, the tote is released back to Available, and the session resets for the next tote.

Generate Label reaches the carrier

Pressing Generate Label fetches real rates and buys a real label. Only press it when the box and address are correct.

When a tote should not be packed

Sometimes a scan is intercepted before Verify Items:

  • Order fulfilled externally. If the order was already fulfilled somewhere else, scanning its tote shows an "Order Fulfilled Externally" card. The tote is flagged for put-back. Press Acknowledge & Continue and route the tote to put-back instead of packing it.
  • Set-aside items. If only some units in a tote should not ship, a "Set aside for put-back" banner lists them on the Verify screen. Do not pack those.

Status reference

The History tab lists past packs with their status:

StatusMeaning
In ProgressPack started, not yet completed
CompletedOrder packed and labeled
CancelledPack cancelled, order returned to picked

Packing has a few supporting screens covered in the manual rather than this walkthrough:

  • Box Sizes — the per-client box catalog.
  • Packing Stations — stations and their label printers.
  • Bulk Ship — packing a group of identical orders together in one session.
